Niacinamide sounds simple.
Until your formula goes wrong.
Your serum turned yellow within two weeks.
You read that niacinamide and vitamin C “cancel each other out” and now you’re afraid to combine them.
You followed a recipe from a blog and it came out cloudy, sticky, or both.
You’re not doing anything wrong. You’re just working with incomplete information.
Most niacinamide content online is either oversimplified marketing or recycled myths from decade-old forum posts.
This guide gives you the real formulation science behind niacinamide, written the way a working formulator actually thinks.
Who This Guide Is For
DIY Formulators
Tired of following recipes without understanding why they work.
Indie Brand Owners
Building a niacinamide product line that actually stays stable on the shelf.
Chemistry Students
Looking for real formulation logic, not textbook theory.
The Curious Maker
Who’s ever Googled “why did my niacinamide serum turn yellow?”
What's Inside
This guide is built in two parts. Part one teaches you how niacinamide actually behaves in a formula. Part two gives you the formulas.
Part 1: The Science You Actually Need
Six core principles every formulator must apply BEFORE adding any active to a formula:
- What niacinamide does (and what it doesn't)
- Concentration ranges: why 5% beats 10% in most cases
- The flushing myth: what the research actually says
- The vitamin C "conflict": why it's overblown
- pH, chelators, and the real stability basics
- When to add it in hot-process vs. cold-process formulas
Part 2: The Formulas
Ready-to-make formulations from beginner to advanced. Each one comes with a full ingredient table, step-by-step method, pH targets, preservative and thickener alternatives, and a troubleshooting section.
- Serums, emulsions, and combination systems.
This Is Not What You Think It Is
✗ Not a random recipe collection from Pinterest.
✗ Not a rehash of “niacinamide is good for your skin.”
✗ Not a list of ingredients without the logic behind them.
✓ A formulation guide. Built around the question every DIY formulator asks before adding niacinamide to a beaker:
How do I actually make this work in my formula?
That's the difference between following a recipe and understanding your formula. This guide is the understanding part.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Why I Wrote This
I’m Ashley, a Chemical Engineer (M.Sc.), formulator, and the person behind SwonLab.
I wrote this guide because niacinamide is one of the most popular actives in DIY skincare, and also one of the most misunderstood. Not because the science is hard, but because the internet has buried the real information under layers of myths, warnings, and recycled blog posts.
Yellowing serums, the “don’t mix with vitamin C” panic, the flushing scare, the pH obsession. Most of it is either wrong or wildly overstated. But if you’re a new formulator, you have no way of knowing that.
So I wrote it down. Clean, honest, practical. The way I wish someone had explained it to me when I started.
